Nel XVII secolo, nella campagna inglese, un contadino, Ralph Gower, dissotterra, arando, un informe pezzo anatomico, né umano né animalesco. Da quel momento, nella pacifica contea cominciano a imperversare malefici a ripetizione, le cui prime vittime sono una giovane, che finisce nel manicomio, e il suo fidanzato, che si mutila della mano destra, trasformatosi improvvisamente in un mostruoso arto coperto di nero pellame. Nel frattempo, una ragazza, Angela Blake, raccolto fra i solchi un insolito artiglio, si trasforma in sacerdotessa di satana, coinvolgendo in diaboliche liturgie gran parte dei giovani e degli adulti che durante i loro incontri sacrificano a Belzebù due ragazzi
